A fully supported version of the HTML5 client is released with vSphere 6.5, and the official name will be vSphere Client.  We won't be renaming this Fling, but may start saying things like 'vSphere Client Fling' in addition to the other terms we've used before. Fling features are not guaranteed to be implemented into the product.

    Floppy Drive not visible

    Jan 08, 2018

    Hi,

I noticed that the an floppy drive is not visible within the HTML5 Client, but in the vSphere Web Client. When I create a new VM the floppy is created by default and from time to time we have or want to check this for VMs and Templates (convert them to vms for that check). From HTML5 Client perspective it looks that there is no floppy, but within the vSphere Web Client or also within the Classic Fat Client I can see it.

I'am only able to check this with the version delivered by latest official release (6.5 7312210).

    Hi Christian -

Thanks for reporting this buy, yes, we have not completed the implementation of the floppy disk in HTML5 client yet. I'm curios to know the use-cases on the floppy disk usage. Could you give more information on what is the purpose of using floppy disk while converting to templates etc.?

    Hi Abhijith,

thank you for your quick response! We have exactly no use case for floppy drives. However we had problems with it in the past and also trying to avoid that we have unnecessary devices configured within the virtual machines.

Our Use Case related to this floppies: If I check the vm compliance (f.e. if there is an floppy configured, which we don't want). I would not see the floppy, even though it is there. Had this problem some days before with an new VM, which will be used as template in the future.

    regards
    Christian

We are aware of a use case for floppy where it is used for configuration data pertaining to an installation from an ISO on data store. In this way the floppy can be used for the dynamic installation configuration files and the ISO does not need to be modified. It would be great to have this fixed in 6.7 as there is no standalone client anymore.

    Hello,
we need this feature to manage floppy-devices. Many of our VMs have floppy devices and we want to remove them.
The only way to do this is via the old flash-interface.
This bug is open for almost 1 year now - when will it be fixed?
    Regards,
    Michael

Windows installation media does not have a driver for the VMWare Paravirtual SCSI Controller. The floppy image must be mounted during Windows setup, so it is still needed from a Windows on VMWare perspective.

It is still possible to add/remove floppy's using the VMware Remote Console (VMRC).
    (NOTE: not the web-console).

Via the VMRC you can go to the Virtual Machine settings (CTRL + D) and add devices from there.
